Installing nVidia drivers

There are more ways to install the video drivers from nVidia, the easiest way is to use the tools module-assistant.

Here are the steps to install correctly.

if you have not already installed:

apt-get install module-assistant nvidia-kernel-common

This tool allows you to facilitate the compilation of external modules to be included in the kernel, in fact, in our case the tool will perform in download source kernel module for nVidia (nvidia-kernel-source package), it will compile and create the package containing the nVidia kernel module and install it in the system.

module-assistant auto-install nvidia

For information, the package created in this way is located:

/usr/src/nvidia-kernel-*.deb

now proceed with the installation of the corresponding library:

apt-get install nvidia-glx

Finally, we simply need to update our configuration file, you should make a backup copy before proceeding:

cp -p /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.old

you must run the following command if the configuration file has been modified manually, otherwise dpkg-reconfigure not be able to write changes:

md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 >| /var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum

run the following command:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

proceed by answering the questions proposed, when asked to choose an "X server driver" select "nvidia" and when asked to select the "X server modules" uncheck "GLcore" and "dri" and select "glx".

Make sure that the Nvidia module is loaded into the kernel at boot system, in "/etc/modules":

grep -q ^nvidia /etc/modules || echo nvidia >> /etc/modules

There are also some tools that allow you to define certain parameters of operation of the advanced video card, among them the NVCLOCK tool allows you to set the clock speed of the GPU and Video RAM, but WARNING how you use it, you destroy your hardware.

Instead, use the nvidia-settings tool, to set the common operating parameters.
